MINNEAPOLIS (1/11/03) -- Going 3-for-4 on the power play, Hamline University overcame an early deficit to score a 4-1 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg scored first, with a goal just 1:43 into the game, but after that, it was all Hamline. The Pipers outshot the Auggies 36-26 and all four Pipers' scorers tallied their first goals of the season.
The teams split the weekend MIAC series, with Hamline improving to 4-9-2 overall and 4-3-1 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 9-6-0 and 4-4-0 in MIAC play, snapping a two-game winning streak.
Ten different Pipers -- all but one a freshman or sophomore -- figured in the scoring on Saturday.
Hamline's Nate Cary (So., Cloquet, Minn.) scored on the power play at the 9:46 mark of the second period, followed by a power-play goal from Shane Wagner (Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) at the 15:08 mark. Jim Deschene (So., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) closed the scoring for the Pipers in the second period with a tally a the 18:47 mark.
The Pipers added an insurance goal on the power play in the third, as Adam Bressler (Fr., Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) claimed a marker at the 11:42 mark.
Hamline entered the game converting just 8.6 percent of their power-play opportunities (5-of-58). After the game, the Pipers' percentage jumped nearly five points to 12.9 percent (8-of-62).
Eric Weum (Fr., Osseo, Minn.) and Steve Malke (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had two assists apiece.
Augsburg's lone goal came on a
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) shot at the 1:43 mark of the first period, on a feed from
Patrick Hook (Jr., Monticello, Minn.).
Tom Lovett (Fr., Rochester, Minn.), in just his fourth game of the season in goal for the Pipers, picked up his first career victory, making 25 saves.
Pete Samargia (Sr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) took the loss in goal for the Auggies, making 32 saves.
Both teams return to MIAC action with series next weekend. Augsburg faces St. Mary's, hosting the Cardinals on Friday (1/17) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and playing at Winona, Minn., on Saturday (1/18) at 7 p.m. Hamline faces St. John's, playing at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. on Thursday (1/16) at 7 p.m. and hosting the Johnnies on Friday at 7 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum.
