St. Olaf completes sweep of Augsburg, winning 5-4 at Augsburg.

MINNEAPOLIS (1/18/03) -- Lindsay Weier (Fr., Menomonie, Wis.) scored the game-winning goal off a faceoff pass from Erin Baxter (So., Rosemount, Minn.) with 3:00 left in the third period, giving the St. Olaf College women's hockey team a 5-4 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Weier and Jennifer Welch (Fr., Bloomington, Minn.) scored twice each for the Oles, and Baxter had a goal and four assists for a five-point day for the Oles, who claimed their first-ever series sweep of the Auggies. In three seasons of varsity play between the two teams, St. Olaf is now 2-4-0 against Augsburg (2-7-0 all-time, including three games with St. Olaf as a club team).

The game was a back-and-forth affair all day long, with Augsburg answering nearly every St. Olaf score. Welch scored twice in the first period, with Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) scoring for Augsburg. Carrie Velenchenko (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) tied the game for the Auggies at the 6:12 mark of the second period, but Weier gave the Oles the lead at the end of the second period with a powe-play goal from Baxter.

Augsburg tied the game at 3-3 at the 11:03 mark of the third period, when Hannah Dietrich (So., Luverne, Minn.) scored on feeds from Jana Ford (So., Eagan, Minn.) and Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS).

The teams traded goals in a 35-second span, as Baxter scored on a feed from Kristen Paulson (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) for St. Olaf at the 14:19 mark, and Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) tied the game for Augsburg with her team-high 16th goal of the season, on assists from Annunziato and Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) at the 14:56 mark.

Annunziato had a goal and two assists for Augsburg, while Chezick and Velenchenko had a goal and assist each.

Both teams had 28 shots each. Andrea Smith (So., Burnsville, Minn.) made 24 saves for the win in goal for St. Olaf, while Kristin Johnson (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) made 23 saves for Augsburg.

Both teams return to MIAC action next week. Augsburg faces Hamline in a two-game series, with a game Wednesday (1/22) at 7 p.m. at the State Fair Coliseum in St. Paul, and a home game Friday (1/24) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Olaf faces Gustavus in a two-game series, with Friday's game at 5 p.m. at St. Olaf and Saturday's (1/26) game at 2 p.m. at Gustavus.
