MINNEAPOLIS (1/20/03) -- Kelly Etzel (Sr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Jennifer Klohs (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had 10 points apiece, as Gustavus Adolphus College led from start to finish in a 57-39 rout of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
The Gusties scored the first five points of the game and never looked back, pushing the lead to as many as 16 points in the first half and 21 points in the second. Gustavus, ranked No. 9 in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national poll, improved to 14-1 overall and 11-1 in the MIAC.
Committing a season-high 33 turnovers -- the ninth time this season Augsburg has had 20 or more turnovers -- Augsburg dropped its fifth game in a row to fall to 4-11 overall and 3-9 in MIAC play. In its last five games, Augsburg has averaged 25.6 turnovers per game, going over 30 turnovers twice.
It was a sloppy, physical game for both teams, as the squads combined for 55 turnovers -- 22 for Gustavus, 33 for Augsburg -- and 40 fouls -- 22 for Augsburg, 18 for Gustavus. But the Gusties hit 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field, compared to 28.3 percent (13-of-46) for Augsburg, as the Auggies were held under 40 points for the third time this season.
Both teams emptied their bench, as 14 Gusties and 13 Auggies saw game action. Etzel and Klohs were the only players to score in double figures in the game.
Kate Sandvig (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had nine points, while Angie Peterson (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) had eight points, four assists, five steals and five rebounds. Kelly Van Norman's (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) eight rebounds led the Gusties.
Augsburg was led by
Julie Andert * (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), who had nine points and seven rebounds.
Britni Morgan (Jr., Brooklyn Center, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had eight points, while
Katie Kelsey (So., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Alicia Pratt (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had six points apiece.
Rosinta Stromquist (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) led the Auggies with eight rebounds.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (1/25). Gustavus plays at Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m., while Augsburg plays at MIAC leader Carleton at 3 p.m.
