NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/24/03) --
Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic) had a goal and three assists for a four-point night, leading Augsburg College to a 5-3, come-from-behind win over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Northfield Ice Arena.
Cesky scored the game's first goal on an unassisted tally, then assisted on all three Auggie goals in the third period, as the Auggies rallied from a 3-2 second-period deficit to claim the win and improve to 12-6-0 overall, 7-4-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won its last three games in a row, five of its last six and eight of its last 11 games.
St. Olaf drops to 9-8-1 overall and 5-4-0 in MIAC play. The teams will conclude their MIAC series on Saturday (1/25) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Cesky scored an unassisted tally at the 2:56 mark of the opening period, followed by a goal from
Collin Nash (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) at the 16:27 mark, on feeds from
Dave Nelson (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and
Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.).
But St. Olaf rallied back with three unanswered goals, two on the power play. St. Olaf was 2-for-5 on the man advantage. On the season, Augsburg's opponents have scored 24 power-play goals in 88 opportunities -- a 27.3-percent clip.
David Short (So., Anchorage, Alaska) scored a power-play goal at the 18:24 mark of the first, and after Keith Townsend (So., Sterling Heights, Mich.) tied the game with an even-strength goal 1:23 into the second, Dana Quinn (So., Madison, Wis.) put the Oles in front on a power-play goal at the 13:30 mark. Both Short and Quinn added assists for two-point nights each, with Patrick Gilles (So., Waunakee, Wis.) adding two assists.
Augsburg claimed the win with its three-goal third period.
Brad Schwartzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored at the 7:13 mark on assist from
Brady Fougner (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) and Cesky, and the Auggies went in front to stay on
Cody Swanson's (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) first collegiate goal, a power-play tally from Cesky at the 17:33 mark. Fougner capped the scoring with an empty-net goal from Schwartzbauer and Cesky with 33 seconds remaining.
Erik Young (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored his fourth straight victory in goal for the Auggies, with 26 saves. Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 46-29 mark. Dan Kehler (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) took the loss for St. Olaf, making 41 saves.
