BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (1/25/03) -- Brad Holzinger (Sr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored two goals and had two assists for a four-point night, leading Augsburg College to a 6-4 win over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Saturday's game, completing a series sweep for the Auggies, was marred by an end-of-game fight that produced 29 penalties for 166 minutes, including three game disqualifications -- two for Augsburg, one for St. Olaf. In all, the game featured 48 penalties for 212 minutes -- 22-for-98 for St. Olaf, 26-for-114 for Augsburg.

Augsburg built a 3-1 first-period lead and maintained the advantage throughout the game, holding off a third-period St. Olaf rally.

Augsburg is now 13-6-0 overall and 8-4-0 in MIAC, winning its fourth game in a row and ninth in its last 12 starts. St. Olaf drops to 9-9-1 overall and 5-5-0 in MIAC play.

Augsburg's second line of Holzinger, Collin Nash (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and David May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) dominated the first period, accounting for all three Auggie goals. Nash opened the scoring at the 3:41 on a goal from May and Holzinger, and after St. Olaf tied the game, Holzinger scored twice in a 2:06 span midway through the period, the first on feeds from May and Nash, the second on feeds from Tarik Yumusaklar (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Nash.

Bryan Hapka (So., Mukwanago, Wis.) scored for the Oles in the first period, on assists from Dana Quinn (So., Madison, Wis.) and Patrick Gilles (So., Waunakee, Wis.).

The second period closed with a flourish, with three goals in the final 1:48. Yumusaklar scored his 10th goal of the season on a feed from Cody Swanson (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) at the 18:12 mark, Gilles scored for St. Olaf on a feed from Quinn at 19:00, and Steve Belde (So., Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored on assists to Holzinger and May at the 19:26 mark.

St. Olaf cut the lead to just one goal with two straight power-play tallies -- one from Joel Ihrie (Fr., Woodinville, Wash.) on assists from Nick Hanson (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Will Wetterlin (Fr., Edina, Minn.) at the 6:45 mark, and the other from Quinn, on feeds from Hanson and Dan Norsten (So., Madison, Wis.) at the 11:56 mark.

But Augsburg shut the door on an Ole comeback just 45 seconds later, when Kyle Holzinger (So., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) joined his older brother Brad in the scorebook, scoring on feeds from Jaro Cesky (Sr., Prague, Czech Republic) and Brad Schwarzbauer (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.).

Pete Samargia (Sr., Gilbert, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) made 35 saves to score the win for the Auggies, while Garret Hasti (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) took the loss for the Oles, making 34 saves.

Tempers flared as the game neared its end, which culminated in the end-of-game fight to generate the plethora of penalties.

Both teams return to action next weekend with MIAC series. Augsburg faces Bethel on Friday (1/31) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and Saturday (2/1) at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn. St. Olaf faces St. John's in a two-game series, with Friday's game at 7 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena and Saturday's game at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
