ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/7/03) -- Nathan Knox and Patrick Kelly scored first half goals, and teammate Joe Wertz scored twice in the second half -- his sixth and seventh goals of the season -- as Macalester College improved to a perfect 6-0 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer play with a 4-0 win Tuesday night over visiting Augsburg College.
The Scots are now 25-0-1 in conference play over the last three seasons. Macalester is now 8-2 overall and 6-0 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 4-7-2 overall and 0-5-1 in MIAC play, dropping its third conference game in a row. Augsburg's winless streak is now at seven straight games (0-5-2), and the Auggies have been shut out in their last three straight games. Augsburg's scoreless streak is now at 360 straight minutes, spanning four games.
Knox scored on a feed from Robb Swick in the second minute. Kelly scored an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute. Wertz scored twice in a five-minute span early in the second half, an unassisted goal in the 50th minute and a goal from Brendan Viele in the 55th minute.
Macalester outshot Augsburg by a 18-5 margin, including a 10-2 margin in the first half. Macalester had 10 shots on goal compared to Augsburg's one, a shot by
Matt Lachner (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) in the second half saved by Tom Klezcewski.
