MINNEAPOLIS (11/25/03) -- Pam Stohr (So., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the third period on Wednesday, lifting the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to a 2-1 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Stohr took a feed from Jackie Foley (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and put a shot over the shoulder of Augsburg goalie
Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) at the 11:53 mark of the third period for the game-winner.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked No. 5 in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll, improved to 4-1-1 overall. Augsburg saw its four-game winning streak halted in falling to 4-2-0 overall.
The key to the Pointer victory came in the third period, as the Pointers outshot the Auggies by a 12-2 margin -- 34-19 in the game. Johnson made 32 saves in a losing effort for the Auggies; Amy Statz (Fr., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) made 18 saves for Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals in a 1:24 span midway through the second period. Ann Ninneman (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) scored her team-high fourth goal of the season on an assist from Kim Lunneborg (So., Richfield, Minn.) to give Wisconsin-Stevens Point a lead at the 12:55 mark.
But at the 14:19 mark, Augsburg's Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) tipped in a blast from
Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.) to tie the game.
Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) notched the second assist on Chezick's power-play goal.
Augsburg's defense held its own against the Pointers, as Wisconsin-Stevens Point went scoreless in five power-play opportunities in the game.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action after the Thanksgiving break, with a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus College Dec. 5-6. The Friday, Dec. 5 game will be at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and the game on Saturday, Dec. 6 will be at 2:05 p.m. at Gustavus.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point also has the Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to action with a two-game Northern Collegiate Hockey Association home series against Lake Forest (Ill.), Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6-7, both games at 2 p.m. in Stevens Point.
