Men's Hockey 11/7/03 -- Wisconsin-Stout 5, Augsburg 2

MENOMONIE, Wis. (11/8/03) -- Augsburg College scored in the first 37 seconds of the game, but the University of Wisconsin-Stout responded with three goals in the second period and Blue Devil goalie Jeff Dotson (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn.) did everything but stand on his head in the third period to preserve a 5-2 nonconference men's hockey win on Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
After Augsburg's
Brady Fougner (So., International Falls, Minn.) scored early in the game, Dotson did not allow a goal until late in the second period, that coming after a series of Augsburg power-play opportunities.
Tony Beaulieu (Fr., Rush City, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Collin Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) assisted on Fougner's goal.
The Blue Devils (3-1-0 overall) got on the board three times in a five-minute span in the second. Matt Mlynarczyk (Fr., Oakdale, Minn.) scored 2:38 into the second period. Lewie Kellin (Sr., Cohasset, Minn.) and Adam Boche (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) assisted.
Less than three minutes later, Dan Riffe (Sr., Byron, Ill.) scored with an assist from Derek Nichols (Sr., Victoria, Minn.). Andy Wiesner (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 7:39, getting an assist from Mike Elm (So., Falcon Heights, Minn).
The Auggies (0-2-0) picked up the only power-play goal of the game with three minutes left in the period, when
Dave Nelson (So., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) blasted home the puck on assists from
Matt Parnell (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Chad Baldwin (Fr., International Falls, Minn.).
Dotson would completely shut out the Auggies from there on, turning away 14 shots in the third period. Dotson got help when Boche scored at 7:33, with an assist by Riffe to push Stout up 4-2. Senior Nate Legler (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) got his first goal of the season at the 12:24 mark, with an assist by Mitch Kellin (Sr., Cohasset, Minn.).
Dotson finished the game with 30 saves, while his counterpart,
David Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) stopped 26 shots.
Both teams are back in nonconference action in the crossover series between the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association next Friday (11/14) and Saturday (11/15). Augsburg will play at Wisconsin-Superior on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and at St. Scholastica on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Stout will play at St. Mary's on Friday at 7 p.m. and will host St. Thomas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
