Augsburg opens 2003-04 campaign with 3-1 loss at Wisconsin-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (11/8/03) -- Lindsy Carlson (Sr., Two Harbors, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and Marlene Yaeger (Jr., Medina, Minn.) made 21 saves in goal, as the University of Wisconsin-River Falls claimed a 3-1 nonconference women's hockey victory over visiting Augsburg College on Saturday night at Hunt Arena.

In its fourth game of the season, River Falls picked up its first victory, now 1-3 overall. The loss was Augsburg's opening game of the 2003-04 season.

The Falcons opened the scoring at 10:17 of the first period, when Amy Gilbertson (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal. She was assisted by Nicole Magnuson (Jr., Chisago City, Minn.) and Carlson.

Augsburg tied the game at 16:31 of the first period, when Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), last season's Division III women's hockey national point-leader, scored a power-play goal on assists from Melynda Kleewein (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and Laura Prasek (Jr., Fridley, Minn.).

The Falcons got the lead for good at 14:37 of the second period when Carlson scored a power-play goal assisted by Kelly Hurley (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.). In the third, Jodi Hensch (Sr., Fergus Falls, Minn.) scored a power-play goal at 5:15 to put the Falcons ahead, 3-1.

The Falcons had 33 shots on goal to Augsburg's 22. UWRF goalie Yaeger made 21 saves to get the win, while Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 30 saves in goal for Augsburg.

River Falls returns to action with a nonconference home game against St. Catherine on Wednesday (11/12) at 7:05 p.m. Augsburg has a two-game nonconference series at Lake Forest (Ill.) next Friday (11/14) at 8 p.m. and Saturday (11/15) at 2:30 p.m.
