Bethel scores game-winner late in 3rd period, upsets Augsburg 3-2

FRIDLEY, Minn. (12/11/03) -- Lisa Kinney (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:10 remaining in the third period, lifting the Bethel College women's hockey team to a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Thursday night at the Columbia Arena.

Bethel rallied from a 2-1 second period deficit to tie the game on an unassisted goal from Heidi Govednik (So., North St. Paul, Minn.) midway through the second period, and Kinney's game-winner, on an assist from Kim Toter (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Maine Township South HS), lifted the Royals to their first win of the season.

Bethel is now 1-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in MIAC play, while Augsburg dropped its fourth game in a row to fall to 4-5-0 overall, 2-3-0 in MIAC play. The win is Bethel's second against Augsburg in the all-time series, which the Auggies lead 7-2-0. Bethel's only other victory over the Auggies came on Jan. 11, 2002, with a 2-1 overtime win at Augsburg. Bethel broke a three-game losing streak to the Auggies.

Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had a goal and assist for the Auggies, as the visitors scored both their goals in a 1:06 span in the second period. Chezick scored an unassisted goal from Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.) at the 4:37 mark, and Annunziato scored on a goal from Chezick and Carrie Velenchenko (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) at the 5:43 mark to give the Auggies a 2-1 lead.

Annunziato now has a team-leading nine goals, including eight in conference play to lead the league. Her 15 points (nine goals, six assists) is also a team high.

Tamara Tremter (Fr., Hopkins, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal just 1:13 into the game to give the Royals their first lead.

Augsburg outshot Bethel 33-21, including a 26-11 edge in the first two periods. Amy Hockett (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 31 saves to earn her first win of the season for the Royals, while Augsburg's Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 18 saves in a losing effort.

Thursday's game was the last for both teams before the holiday break. Augsburg will be on an eight-day, three exhibition-game trip to Italy Dec. 28-Jan. 5, before returning to regulation play with the second game of the season against Bethel, on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7:05 p.m., at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Bethel returns to action on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
