Women's Hockey 2/7/03 -- Augsburg 5, Concordia-Moorhead 4

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/7/03) --
Annie Annunziato (Jr., Commack, N.Y.) scored her second hat trick of the season, with three goals and an assist for a four-point night, leading Augsburg College to a 5-4, come-from-behind win over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Moorhead Youth Hockey Arena.
Augsburg gave up three goals in the first 8:12 of the game, but scored five unanswered goals over the next 21 minutes to claim the victory and improve to 10-9-1 overall and 8-5-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg has won three games in a row and seven of its last 10 games.
Concordia drops to 10-6-1 overall and 8-4-1 in MIAC play.
Augsburg's top forward line of Annunziato,
Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.) and
Carrie Velenchenko (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) accounted for four of Augsburg's five goals on the night. The trio now has 45 of Augsburg's 69 goals this year (65.2 percent) and 104 of Augsburg's 171 total points (60.8 percent).
Both Annunziato and Chezick lead the team with 19 goals on the season, putting them in a tie for ninth place among Division III women's hockey players nationally in scoring. Chezick has 42 total points and Annunziato has 41, putting them in sixth and seventh place, respectively, in the nation in total scoring.
Annunziato opened Augsburg's scoring at the 9:06 mark of the first period with a shorthanded goal from Chezick, setting a school single-season record with her fourth shorthanded goal of the season.
Chezick answered with a goal from Annunziato and Velenchenko at the 15:16 mark, and Annunziato tied the game on a goal from Chezick at the 18:45 mark.
Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS) gave the Auggies the lead with a goal from
Jana Ford (So., Eagan, Minn.) and
Melynda Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) at the 5:49 mark of the second period, and Annunziato got her third goal of the game, and the eventual game-winner, from Chezick and Velenchenko at the 10:29 mark.
The five-goal outburst chased Concordia starting goalie Shyla Wilson from the game with just 15 saves in 32:41. Jamie Savage finished the game in goal for the Cobbers, making 16 saves.Augsburg outshot Concordia 36-24 in the game.
Sandra Ryden opened the scoring for the Cobbers with an unassisted goal at the 2:58 mark of the first period, followed two minutes later by an unassisted goal from Lindsay Czarnecki. Annie Knierim scored at the 8:12 mark to give the Cobbers a 3-0 lead, on feeds from Christine Kleven and Katie Jacques.
The Cobbers scored on three of their seven shots in the first period against Augsburg goalie
Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.), but after that, she was rock solid, stopping 16 of her last 17 shots to pick up the win in net. Jacques scored for the Cobbers at the 15:19 mark of the second period.
