Women's Basketball 2/8/03 -- Hamline 85, Augsburg 66

MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/03) -- Junior post player Laura Fleischman was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field, en route to scoring 19 points, as Hamline University beat Augsburg College 85-66 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.
Fleischman also grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Pipers. Fleischman was 3-of-3 from the floor, 2-of-3 from the foul line in the first half as the Pipers (5-16 overall, 5-13 MIAC) grabbed a 39-23 lead at the break. Six points came during a critical 12-4 run that gave the Pipers a 20-10 lead.
The Pipers held the Auggies (4-17 overall, 3-15 MIAC) to just 24 percent shooting from the field in the first half (8-of-34). The Pipers were 14-of-36 in the half for 39 percent.
Augsburg has now lost 11 games in a row.
Hamline poured it on in the second half, opening up a 30-point cushion on three separate occasions -- the last coming on an Amber Coates jumper with 3:07 left in the contest that made the score 79-49. Fleischman scored 11 points in the second half on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor.
The Pipers had three players in double figures. Freshman Carolyn Korchik and junior Jessica Barrett each added 13 points in the victory. Chaia Herrgott added seven points. In all, 14 different Pipers tallied points in the game.
Augsburg was led by
Ashley Sasek (So., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS), who scored 15 points.
Jenna Cummins (Fr., Austin, Minn.) and
Missy Larson (Fr., Pine Island, Minn.) scored in double figures for the first time in their careers, each scoring 12 points. Larson led the Auggies with nine rebounds.
Alicia Pratt (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) had seven points and eight rebounds.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday (2/12) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Olaf and Hamline hosting Carleton.
