Augsburg opens season with dual meet split with Bethel at Riverside Park -- Auggie men win 23-34, Auggie women fall 26-29.

MINNEAPOLIS (8/29/03) -- Augsburg College opened its cross country season with a split of a dual meet with Bethel College on Friday morning at Riverside Park. Augsburg's men won its meet with Bethel by a 23-34 margin, while Bethel won the women's meet by a narrow 26-29 margin over Augsburg.

Both the men and women ran identical 5,000-meter courses at Riverside Park, a Minneapolis city park near the Augsburg campus that serves as the Auggies' training course. It was the second straight year Augsburg and Bethel have opened the season with a dual meet at Riverside Park.

Riley Conway (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) and Dan Vogel (Jr., LaCrescent, Minn.) dueled throughout the men's race and finished a strong 200-meter sprint to the finish, as Conway edged Vogel at the finish line. Both recorded 16:41 finishing times. Ryan Nevin (Sr., Barron, Wis.) finished third in 16:53. Augsburg's Erik Lundberg (So., Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) placed fifth in 17:06 and Micah Lenthe (Fr., Fergus Falls, Minn.), running in his first collegiate race, placed 12th in 18:26.

Bethel's men put five placers in the top 10, with Adam Erickson taking fourth in 16:58, John Lawrey placing sixth in 17:25, Nick Jones taking seventh in 17:29, Josh Tschetter taking eighth in 17:31 and Noel Stringham placing ninth in 17:36.

On the women's side, Bethel's Amy Lyons blistered the 5,000-meter course, running in a course-record 19:26, breaking the course record of 20:48 set last year by Bethel's Anna Gunderson.

Both teams put five runners in the top 10 to produce the narrow team finish in the dual meet. Augsburg's Ellen Waldow (So., Lanesboro, Minn.) finished second in 20:50 and Hannah Dietrich (Jr., Luverne, Minn.) took third in 21:04. Amy Mackner (Sr., Barnesville, Minn.) ran a personal-best 21:34 to place sixth, Rebecca Welle (Jr., Sauk Centre, Minn.) placed eighth in 21:56 and Andrea Carlson (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Visitation HS) ran 10th in 22:01.

For Bethel, Janet Dieter placed fourth in 21:16, Paige Emery ran fifth in 21:24, Jackie Meints placed seventh in 21:49 and Tricia Steele finished ninth in 21:59.

Augsburg returns to action on Sept. 13 at the Carleton College Quadrangular in Northfield, Minn. Bethel will return to action also on Sept. 13, at the All-American Invitational at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
