INDIANOLA, Iowa (8/31/03) -- Henry Peterson (Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lincoln HS) and Mosa Shayan (Fr., Indianola, Iowa) each scored a goal and Brandon Volz (Sr., Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk HS) add an insurance penalty kick as Simpson College denied Augsburg College its first win of the year, with a 3-1 triumph in nonconference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Simpson.
Augsburg is now 0-2 on the season. Simpson is now 2-0 overall, having beaten Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Bethel 2-1 on Saturday.
Entering the second half only down 1-0, Augsburg's
Noah Turner (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) tallied his first collegiate goal off a corner kick from
Aaron Riedel (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) to tie the game up. Shayan added his goal 10 minutes later, and in the 83rd minute, Volz added the insurance penalty kick.
Lucas Grant (Jr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) made nine saves in a 90-minute effort for the Auggies, while Jason Wichman (Sr., Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lincoln HS) made four saves in 90 minutes for Simpson. Augsburg was outshot 20-8 in the losing effort.
Augsburg opens the home portion of its schedule with a contest Tuesday (9/2) at 7 p.m. against Northwestern-Roseville at Edor Nelson Field. It's the first of six straight home matches for the Auggie men's soccer team.
