Augsburg swept in MIAC season-opener at Concordia-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/17/03) -- Concordia College-Moorhead opened its 2003 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season by sweeping visiting Augsburg College 3-0 (30-22, 30-17, 30-22) on Wednesday night at Memorial Auditorium. The Cobbers pushed their overall record to 9-3 while the Auggies fell to 1-8. It was the first MIAC match for both teams.

For the second straight match, the Cobbers used a balanced front-line attack to beat their opponent. Against Mayville State, 11 different Cobbers had at least one kill and against the Auggies, Concordia had 10 players with a least one kill. Freshman Rebecca Shane (Fr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led all players with 13 kills and Jacki Barten (Jr., Melrose, Minn.) chipped in 12 kills. Jessica Walden (Jr. Hawley, Minn.) had only 27 assists in the match but added eight kills.

Augsburg was led by Bri Simon (Fr., Hayfield, Minn.), who finished the match with eight kills. Linnea Evans (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had seven kills and a team-high 16 digs, and Mandy Good (Sr., Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan HS) added 14 digs.

Alexis Johnson (So., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) and Anna Piermantier (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) each had 13 assists in the losing effort.

Concordia started slowly and was only able to take control of the opening game midway through the contest. With the score tied at 16-16, the Cobbers rattled off six of the next seven points to push the lead to 22-17. They were able to ease the margin to eight points and come away with the 30-22 win. The Cobbers used the same script for the final two games. In game two, Concordia scored 14 of the last 19 points to win 30-17 and in the final game of the match, the Cobbers used a 10-5 run to finish off the Auggies.

Augsburg managed just two total blocks in the match, while Concordia had eight total blocks.

Both teams compete this weekend in tournaments. Augsburg will compete at the Elmhurst (Ill.) Invitational on Friday (9/19) and Saturday (9/20), while Concordia will host the annual Cobber Invitational.
