BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (9/2/03) --
Mike Elcano (Jr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) scored the game-winning goal on a three-way passing play with 4:27 left on Monday, lifting Augsburg College to its first men's soccer win of the season, a 1-0 triumph over Northwestern College-Roseville in nonconference action at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
In the 85th minute, Augsburg received a free kick after a yellow card was issued to a Northwestern player.
Steve Gehrmann (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) took the free kick from 45 yards out and angled a pass to the right corner of the penalty box, where
Noah Turner (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.) pitched a one-touch pass to Elcano, who was sprinting to the center of the six-yard box. Elcano put the shot past Northwestern goalkeeper David Keller (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) for the game-winner.
It was the first goal of the season for Elcano, Augsburg's leading scorer last season (10 goals). He now has 16 goals in his Auggie career.
Augsburg is now 1-2 on the season, while Northwestern drops to 1-1 overall.
Augsburg controlled the action throughout the game, but could not put a solid scoring effort together until the free kick from the yellow card. The Auggies outshot the Eagles by a 26-19 margin.
Lucas Grant (Jr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS), who returned to the Auggies after not playing last season, claimed his first collegiate shutout in goal, making seven saves. Keller made eight saves in a losing effort for the Eagles.
