MINNEAPOLIS (9/30/03) -- Matt Pilon (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) and David Wingard (So., Elk River, Minn.) scored goals for the University of St. Thomas, leading the Tommies to a 2-0 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer match Tuesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by an 18-7 margin en route to the victory, improving to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 4-6-2 overall and 0-4-1 in MIAC play. After opening the season 4-2-0, the Auggies have suffered through a six-game winless streak (0-4-2).
Both of St. Thomas' goals came on long feeds. Pilon scored his third goal of the season on a long pass from Matt Michalik (So., Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest HS), taking the feed on a break and firing from 25 yards out in the 11th minute.
In the 61st minute, Wingard received a long feed from Patrick Wand (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS) and fired from 25 yards for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
St. Thomas tested Augsburg goalkeeper
Lucas Grant (Jr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) often, with nine shots on goal, three from Joe Roedler (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
On the flip side, Augsburg had just one shot on goal, as Peder Hatling (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) made the lone save of the game for the Tommies. He played the first half, with Orin Kipp (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) finishing the game.
Augsburg's lone shot on goal came on a header by
Geoff Johnson (So., Blaine, Minn.) on a corner kick in the 35th minute.
Both teams return to MIAC play next Tuesday (10/7), with St. Thomas hosting Hamline at 4 p.m., and Augsburg playing at Macalester at 7:30 p.m.
Augsburg also has its annual alumni match on Homecoming Saturday (10/4) at 4:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
