Lucas Olson-Patterson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) claimed his third double-double of the season with 18 points, 13 rebounds and five steals, but it was not enough for Augsburg College, as St. Olaf College scored a 58-56, overtime win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf.
Matt Schlenker hit a jumper in the closing seconds of overtime to give the Oles the victory, improving to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in MIAC play. Augsburg lost its fifth game in a row to fall to 5-8 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play.
Augsburg did itself no help in the loss with its worst shooting performance of the season, hitting just 23 percent (14-of-61) from the field, 4-of-20 (20 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, St. Olaf hit 40.4 percent from the field (21-of-52), including 40 percent (6-of-15) from three-point range.
The game, Augsburg's first overtime contest of the season, featured 18 lead changes and eight ties.
Augsburg led by as many as six points in the first half, but a 10-3 run over the last 2:58 of the first half gave the Oles the halftime lead, 31-30. Olson-Patterson had 14 points, four steals and four rebounds in the first half.
St. Olaf's run continued into the second half, as the Oles eventually led 38-31 with 14:21 left in regulation, a lead extended to eight points before the Auggies taged a rally. Augsburg eventually tied the game at 44-44 with 7:10 left, and the teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, eventually reaching overtime tied at 51-51. St. Olaf led by three points in the final 30 seconds, but Augsburg's
Josh Klem (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 56-56, setting the stage for Schlenker's game-winner.
Olson-Patterson was the lone Auggie to score in double figures.
Grant Hemmingsen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had nine points and seven rebounds, going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Klem also had nine points on three 3-pointers.
Marcus "Rico" Gholson (Sr., Gary, Ind./William A. Wirt HS) had seven points.
Schlenker had 11 points, five assists and six rebounds for the Oles. Erik Sviggum scored 13 points and had seven rebounds, while Dane Huber had nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (1/14) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Mary's and St. Olaf playing at Macalester.
