Theisen has double-double, Augsburg rallies for 73-64 win over St. Olaf!

MINNEAPOLIS (1/10/04) -- Freshman center Selina Theisen (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) notched her sixth double-double of the season with 21 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, pacing Augsburg College to a 73-64, come-from-behind triumph over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Theisen had a double-double in the second half alone, scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as Augsburg rallied from an early 11-2 deficit and a halftime deficit of 35-30, outscoring the Oles 43-29 in the second half. Theisen scored in double figures for the 10th straight game and notched 20 points for the fifth time in her young career.

Augsburg broke a four-game losing streak in improving to 2-9 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play. St. Olaf falls to 0-11 overall, 0-8 in MIAC play. Seven of St. Olaf's 11 losses have been by 10 points or less this season.

St. Olaf led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Auggies used an 8-0 run to cut the advantage to two points, 28-26 with 2:30 left in the first half. However, St. Olaf pulled away to lead by five points at the break. Holly Grimsrud (Fr., Zumbrota, Minn.) had 11 of her game-high 19 points in the first half for the Oles.

Out of the locker room, Augsburg eventually tied the game at 41-41 with 12:09 remaining, but could not take the lead as the teams battled back and forth, tying the game five times in a five-minute span. In all, there were eight lead changes and seven ties in the game.

Augsburg finally notched its first lead of the game with 7:24 remaining, as Julie Andert * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) converted a three-point play to give the Auggies a 50-49 advantage.

Augsburg then used a 9-2 run over a two-minute span to take a 64-57 lead with 3:16 left, with Theisen scoring four points and Katie Kelsey (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) scoring five points in the run. St. Olaf could not cut the Auggie advantage under four points the rest of the way, and Augsburg's final nine-point margin of victory was its biggest lead of the game.

Augsburg dominated on the inside, scoring 30 points "in the paint" to St. Olaf's 18. Augsburg also took advangage of 26 offensive rebounds, converting 27 second-chance points to St. Olaf's six. Augsburg outrebounded St. Olaf by a 51-33 margin.

Four Auggies scored in double figures. Ashley Vossen (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) hit four 3-pointers and scored in double figures for the second straight game, with 17 points, four steals and four rebounds. Kelsey had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Andert had 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ashley Sasek (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had six points, four assists and two steals.

Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn./St. James HS) had 13 points, five rebounds and two assists for the Oles, while Christine Schwichtenberg (So., Hopkins, Minn.) had nine points, four rebounds and three steals, and Molly Simon (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) had eight points, six rebounds and two steals. Sarah McBroom (Sr., Mora, Minn.) had six points and Kelly Sweeney (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday (1/14) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Mary's and St. Olaf hosting Macalester.
