Women's Hockey 1/10/04 -- Augsburg 7, Wisconsin-River Falls 4
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (1/10/04) --
Kristin Murr (Fr., Thornton, Colo./Quest Academy HS) tied a school record with two goals in a 16-second span while adding an assist, and Augsburg College tied a school record with five power-play goals, as the Auggies claimed a 7-4 home victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a nonconference women's hockey game on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg scored three power-play goals in a school-record 37-second span in the final minute of the second period to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead that the Auggies would not relinquish. The three goals in 37 seconds broke the previous school mark for quick three goals, 40 seconds in a 2000 game against Bethel. Augsburg went 5-for-9 on power plays, just the second time in school history that Augsburg has scored five power-play goals in a game; Augsburg went 5-for-10 on power plays in a 7-0 win over Hamline in a 2002 game.
Augsburg won its second straight game and avenged a season-opening 3-1 loss to River Falls (Nov. 8) to improve to 6-5-0 overall. Wisconsin-River Falls, in its first game after a 28-day holiday braak, dropped its second game in a row to fall to 8-7-0 on the season.
Leah Baron (So., Hermantown, Minn./Proctor-Hermantown HS) scored two first-period goals to give the visiting Falcons an early 2-1 lead, bracketing a first-period Auggie goal from
Christina Hughes (Sr., Chaska, Minn.).
Augsburg tied the game at the 6:35 mark of the second period on a power-play goal from
Corrie Krzyska (Jr., Fridley, Minn.), but the Falcons took the lead back 12 seconds later, as Lou Paulson (So., Duluth, Minn./Proctor-Hermantown HS) sprinted off the face off and fired in a goal.
But the penalty bug hit Wisconsin-River Falls in the closing minutes of the second period, and the Auggies turned the tide of the game with their three-goal outburst in the final minute of the second period.
Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) scored on a 5-on-3 power play from
Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) at the 19:17 mark, and after another penalty was assessed to the Falcons at the 19:26 mark for another 5-on-3 advantage, the Auggies scored four seconds later, with
Genevieve Allegrezza (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS), scoring off a successful face-off draw from
Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.). Annunziato finished the scoring streak at the 19:54 mark on a 5-on-4 advantage, scoring from Allegrezza and
Melynda Kleewein (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS).
Murr scored two goals in a 16-second span early in the third period to tie a school record for quickest two goals by an individual. The previous 16-second feat was set by Angie Rieger in a 2001 game against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Amy Gilbertson (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Farmington HS) finished the scoring for Wisconsin-River Falls with a goal at the 18:10 mark.
Krzyska had a three-point night for the Auggies, with a goal and two assists, while Allegrezza and Annunziato had a goal and assist each. Anderson had three assists, with Kleewein contributing two assists.
Wisconsin-River Falls outshot Augsburg by a 24-21 margin.
