St. Olaf defeats Augsburg 5-1 in opening game of MIAC series

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/16/04) -- St. Olaf College claimed two goals and an assist from Lindsay Weier, as the Oles scored a 5-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College at the Northfield Ice Arena in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey contest on Friday night.

Kate Barnett added a goal and an assist for the Oles, now 7-4-2 overall and 5-2-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 6-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in MIAC play.

St. Olaf built a 4-0 lead into the third period before Augsburg got on the board. Weier scored at the 2:25 mark of the first period, on an assist from Brit Schultheis. Barnett scored an unassisted goal at the 18:20 mark of the first period, and Maria Richardson scored her team-high eighth goal of the season at the 9:24 mark of the second period. Erin Baxter gave the Oles a 4-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 4:24 mark of the third period, on a feed from Weier.

Augsburg finally got on the board at the 9:45 mark, when Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.) scored her team-high 11th goal of the season, coming on an assist from Melynda Kleewein (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS). But Weier¹s second goal of the game, a power-play tally from Barnett at the 16:50 mark, sealed the game.

Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 40-26 mark, but Ole goalie Andrea Smith had an impressive performance, stopping 39 shots to score the win. Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 21 saves for the Auggies.
