Fougner scores 2 goals for third game in a row, Augsburg sweeps Hamline 5-2!

MINNEAPOLIS (1/17/04) -- Brady Fougner (So., International Falls, Minn.) scored two goals in a game for the third game in a row, adding an assist for a three-point night in leading Augsburg College to a 5-2 victory over visiting Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Fougner, last week's MIAC Player of the Week, put together a six-point weekend, with four goals and two assists. He now has nine points, including seven goals, in his last four conference games, and leads the team in scoring (11 goals, four assists, 15 points).

Augsburg claimed its first MIAC sweep of the season to improve to 5-7-2 overall, 3-2-1 in MIAC play. Hamline remains winless on the season at 0-13-0 overall, 0-6-0 in the MIAC.

After a scoreless first period, Fougner put the Auggies on the board with a power-play goal from Critter Nagurski (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) and Dave Nelson (So., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS) at the 2:56 mark of the second period.

Hamline tied the game on an Alex Morawiecki (So., Winona, Minn.) goal at the 17:39 mark, but 55 seconds later, Augsburg took the lead back, as Steve Belde (Jr., Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored his first goal of the season from Brett Osness (So., Calgary, Alberta/Springbrook HS) and Collin Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS).

Nagurski put the Auggies up by two goals with his third goal of the season, from Fougner, at the 3:48 mark of the third period, but the Pipers stayed close, as Mike Forconi (So., Bovey, Minn.) scored a power-play goal just 38 seconds later to cut the lead to one goal.

Fougner cliched the game for the Auggies with his second goal of the game, from Nagurski and Blake Dronen (Fr., Chaska, Minn.), midway through the third period. Cody Swanson (So., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) added an empty-net goal in the final minute to complete the scoring.

Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 42-18 margin in the game, including a 25-9 edge in the second period. In the second periods of the two-game series, Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 51-21 margin. Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 87-48 margin on the weekend.

John Harstad (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.) made 37 saves in goal for the Pipers, giving him a 78-save weekend in the net. Erik Young (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) made 16 saves for the Auggies.

Both teams are back in action next weekend with MIAC series, as Augsburg faces St. Mary's and Hamline faces St. John's. In the Augsburg series, Friday's (1/23) game is at 7:05 p.m. in Winona, Minn., with Saturday's (1/24) game at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
