Men's Hockey 1/23/04 -- St. Mary's 3, Augsburg 2
BOXSCORE
WINONA, Minn. (1/23/04) -- Jason Fillipp (Sr., Fox River Grove, Ill.) scored the third of St. Mary's University's three second-period goals with six seconds remaining in the period and SMU held on over the game's final 20 minutes, en route to a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey victory over Augsburg College on Friday night at the SMU Ice Arena, breaking a 14-game, seven-season unbeaten streak to the Auggies in the process.
Augsburg had a 13-0-1 record in its previous 14 contests against the Cardinals, with SMU's last win a 4-1 decision at Augsburg on Feb. 21, 1997, the first time Augsburg head coach Mike Schwartz faced St. Mary's.
St. Mary's is now 9-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 5-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in MIAC play. The loss broke a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) for Augsburg in January.
After a scoreless first period, Chad Damerow (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) got SMU on the board at the 8:47 mark of the second period. Less than a minute later, Nick Meeker (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) made it 2-0, rifling a shot from the high slot that eluded the glove of Augsburg goalie
Erik Young (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Jake Wegscheider (Sr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) pulled the Auggies to within one, 2-1, at 13:53, banging a rebound past SMU goalie Ryne Ess (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.). Then came Fillipp's heroics, as he picked up a loose puck and beat Young -- and the clock -- to give SMU a 3-1 lead heading into the game's final period.
Collin Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) netted a power-play goal eight minutes into the third period to once again pull Augsburg to within a goal, but that was as close as the Auggies would get as the Cardinals shut them down the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Young made 34 saves in goal for the Auggies, as St. Mary's outshot the Auggies by a 37-27 margin. Ess made 25 saves to pick up the win.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/24) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
