Stacy Anderson scores twice, Augsburg claims series split with St. Mary's with 2-1 win

WINONA, Minn. (1/24/04) -- Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) claimed her first collegiate two-goal game and goalie Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) stopped 32 shots to pick up the win, as Augsburg College claimed a series split with a 2-1 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey contest Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.

Anderson ended up with a four-point (three goals, one assist) weekend for the Auggies, who improved to 7-8-0 overall, 4-6-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg broke a three-game losing streak in the process. St. Mary's drops to 9-5-1 overall, 6-4-0 in MIAC play.

Anderson scored her first goal at the 5:42 mark of the first period, on feeds from Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.).

The assist gives Chezick 97 career points (40 goals, 57 assists) at Augsburg. Chezick could become the second Augsburg player to ever break the 100-point barrier (varsity opponents only); Angie Rieger (1997-2001) holds the school's career scoring record with 120 points (68 goals, 52 assists). Chezick holds Augsburg's school record for career assists (57).

Annunziato also assisted on Anderson's second goal, coming at the 10:18 mark of the first period. A transfer from Manhattanville (N.Y.) last season, Annunziato currently has 76 points (34 goals, 42 assists) as an Auggie, and 139 career points overall (56 goals, 83 assists).

Melissa Mondo (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) put St. Mary's on the board at the 11:25 mark of the third period, scoring on the power play from Rebecca Jelenc (Fr., Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan South HS). Mondo had three goals and an assist on the weekend.

St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 33-28 margin, peppering Augsburg goalie Johnson with 27 shots in the final two periods. Augsburg's 14-6 shot advantage in the first period was its only shot-on-goal advantage of the game. Nikki Jung (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) made 26 saves in a losing effort.

Augsburg has a nonconference series with Wisconsin-Superior next weekend. Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Superior on Friday (1/30) at 7:05 p.m., and plays at Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday (1/31) at 2:05 p.m. St. Mary's is off next weekend, and returns to action on Feb. 6 at 7:05 p.m. with a home game against Gustavus.
