ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/28/04) --
Katie Kelsey (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored 14 of her 18 points in the decisive second half to lead Augsburg College past Macalester College 71-63 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the Macalester Gymnasium.
The Auggies trailed 28-26 at the intermission but shot 60 percent in the second half (15-for-25), including 5-for-6 from three-point range to improve to 4-13 overall, 4-10 in MIAC play. The Auggies also went 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the period.
An 18-8 run over a five-minute span midway through the second half gave the Auggies an 11-point lead, 58-47 with 7:52 left to play, a lead the Auggies would stretch to 12 in the closing minutes.
Selina Theisen (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) claimed her MIAC-high 11th double-double of the season with 17 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots for the Auggies. It is her seventh double-double in her last nine games. Theisen has now scored in double figures in her last 16 straight games.
Ashley Vossen (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) added 14 points for the Auggies, connecting on 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Julie Andert * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), making her return to the Auggie lineup after missing her last five games with a shoulder injury, scored eight points and had three rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Afton Hanson (Sr., Karlstad, Minn./Tri-County HS) had 26 points and six assists to lead Macalester (0-17, 0-14 MIAC). Sara Entgelmeier (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) added 12 points and seven rebounds while Sarah Jacoby (Sr., Mulberry, Ind./Clinton Prairie HS) scored 10 points. Alice Hacker (Jr., Portland, Ore./Catlin Gabel HS) distributed six assists.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (1/31) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts St. Benedict at Si Melby Hall, while Macalester hosts Concordia.
