Women's Basketball 1/3/04 -- St. Thomas 66, Augsburg 49

Minneapolis (1/3/04) – Nikki Zappa (Fr., Elk River), scored 17 points and Kristi Huegel (Jr., Alta Vista, Iowa/New Hampton) scored 13 points and had 5 assists to help St. Thomas defeat Augsburg 66-49.

Augsburg started out firing with a 10-4 run in the first 6:30 minutes of the game. Augsburg maintained the lead throughout the first half until the 1:15 mark of the first half when Zappa hit a 3-pointer to take the lead 27-25. Katie Kelsey (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) made a layup with 10 seconds remaining to tie the game going into half time.

Another jumper by Kelsey gave the Auggies a lead in the second half, but that would be their last of the game. A 13-3 run over a 4 minute span helped St. Thomas pull away from Augsburg.

Fouls and turnovers plagued the Auggies as three Augsburg players fouled out and 24 turnovers were commited. St. Thomas was able to turn the turnovers into points with 31 points coming off of Ausburg turnovers.

Julie Andert * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Selina Theisen (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) each had 11 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Auggies.

Augsburg returns to action Mon., Jan 5th as they host the Bethel College Royals as Si Melby Hall. Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
