SUPERIOR, Wis. (1/31/04) -- Lindsay Bennett (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) scored the game-winning goal with 3:21 left in the third period, lifting the University of Wisconsin-Superior to a 2-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena.
Wisconsin-Superior outshot Augsburg by a 42-14 margin -- 29-6 in the first two periods -- but could only manage to get two shots past Augsburg goalie
Katie Fedoryk (Sr., Austin, Minn.). In the weekend split with the Auggies, the Yellowjackets held a 69-34 margin in shots on goal.
Wisconsin-Superior, ranked No. 6 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll, improves to 15-3-1 overall. Augsburg drops to 8-9-0 overall.
Mary Jane McCormick (Fr., Batchewane Bay, Ontario) scored her second goal of the weekend at the 12:04 mark of the first period, on an assist from heidi Watson (Fr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), to give the Yellowjackets the early advantage.
But
Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) tied the game for the Auggies on her second goal of the weekend, an unassisted tally at the 14:20 mark of the second period.
Bennett's game-winning goal came on assists from Rae Lundberg (So., Superior, Wis.) and Kyla Thibideau (Fr., St. Adolphe, Manitoba).
Elyse Dowdell (Fr., Willmar, Minn.) made 13 saves for Wisconsin-Superior.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a two-game series against Concordia-Moorhead, with both games at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Friday's (2/6) game is at 7:05 p.m., while Saturday's (2/7) game is at 2:05 p.m.
