Women's Basketball 1/7/04 -- Hamline 77, Augsburg 69
BOXSCORE
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/7/04) -- Sophomore guard Carolyn Korchik scored a career-high 31 points, on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, as Hamline University defeated visiting Augsburg College 77-69 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.
Korchik tallied 18 points in the second half, including 13 points in a pivotal 20-7 run midway through the half that gave the Pipers (4-6 overall, 2-5 MIAC) a 58-44 lead with 10:41 left in the game. Korchik scored the first 11 points in the spurt -- nine coming on three-pointers. Korchik was 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Hamline opened up a 38-25 lead at the break, but the Auggies (1-9 overall, 1-6 MIAC) stormed back to within one after starting the half on a 12-0 run.
Ashley Vossen (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) scored seven of her 23 points during the span.
Center
Selina Theisen (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) paced the Auggies with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting, the fourth 20-point game of her young career and ninth-straight double-figure scoring effort. She also added eight rebounds and six blocked shots.
Despite Theisen and Vossen's hot shooting, the Auggies shot just 35.5 percent from the floor -- as the rest of the team went 4-of-33 from the field. Hamline was 41.5 percent shooting (27-65) and was 7-13 from three-point range -- mainly because of Korchik.
Freshman point guard Erin Petrich scored 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Senior post Jess Barrett chipped in 13 points -- five points short of 1,000 for her career.
Both teams host Northfield foes in MIAC games on Saturday (1/10) at 1 p.m. Augsburg hosts St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall, while Hamline hosts Carleton.
