National No. 12 Wisconsin-Superior shuts out Augsburg 5-0.

MINNEAPOLIS (11/12/04) -- Mathieu Bonnelly (Jr., Quebec City, Quebec) made 18 saves to pick up the shutout in goal, and Mike Wiggins (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) had a goal and an assist, leading the University of Wisconsin-Superior to a 5-0 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

In improving to 2-0-1 on the season, Wisconsin-Superior outshot Augsburg (0-2-1) by a 30-18 margin, including a 10-5 margin in the first period, as the Yellowjackets built a commanding 3-0 lead. Wisconsin-Superior is ranked No. 12 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll.

The Yellowjackets scored three goals in a 4:02 span of the first frame, with Jay Dardis (Jr., Proctor, Minn.) scoring at the 12:16 mark, Kyle Nosan (Sr., Baudette, Minn.) scoring at the 13:29 mark and Luke Vanderkerkhove (Fr., Surrey, British Columbia) scoring at the 16:18 mark.

Rob Whidden (Sr., Coquitlam, British Columbia) scored for the Yellowjackets late in the second period on a shorthanded goal, and Wiggins collected his team-leading fourth goal of the season on the power play midway through the third period.

Both teams had 12 penalties for 24 minutes, but Augsburg was shut out in its 10 power-play attempts, while Wisconsin-Superior went 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

Tony Ciro (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 25 saves for Augsburg, which has been outscored by a 14-6 margin after three games this season.

Both teams continue MIAC-NCHA crossover action on Saturday (11/13). Augsburg hosts St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Wisconsin-Superior travels to Concordia-Moorhead for a 7 p.m. contest.
