Women's Hockey 11/13/04 -- Augsburg 6, Finlandia (Mich.) 3
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (11/13/04) -- Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) scored two goals and added two assists, becoming Augsburg College's all-time leading career scorer in women's hockey, as the Auggies completed a nonconference series sweep of Finlandia University (Mich.) with a 6-3 triumph Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
On a day when Augsburg celebrated its 10th anniversary of its women's hockey program as the oldest varsity program in the Midwest, Chezick clinched the school's all-time scoring record with her 50th career goal on a rebound shot at the 13:25 mark of the third period.
Chezick now has 121 career points (50 goals, 71 assists), breaking the old scoring record of 120 points, set by Angie Rieger from 1997-2001 (68 goals, 52 assists). Chezick is currently second in school history in career goals, while holding the school's career assist record.
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) scored two goals and added two assists for the Auggies, now 2-0-2 on the season. Anderson scored both her goals in a 47-second span starting the second period.
Finlandia, a first-year program in just its fourth collegiate women's hockey game, is now 0-4 on the season. Augsburg outscored Finlandia by a 13-3 margin in the two games.
Augsburg's first line of Chezick, Anderson and
Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) accounted for five of Augsburg's six goals on the day, with Cookson adding a goal and two assists.
Danielle Syrowik (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) scored two goals for the Lions, with Jenna Skradski (Fr., Escanaba, Mich.) adding the other Finlandia tally.
The teams matched each other's goals in the first period. Cookson scored just 32 seconds into the game, but Syrowik answered for the Lions at the 12:54 mark on an assist from Ashley Leitch (Fr., Garden City, Mich.). Chezick scored on the power play from
Britt Pennington (Jr., St. Cloud, Mich./Tech HS) at the 19:01 mark, but Finlandia answered just 21 seconds later, as a Skradski shot from the blue line trickled past Augsburg goalie
Jena Kleis (Fr., Hastings, Minn.).
Anderson scored her team-high sixth and seventh goals of the year in the first 55 seconds of the second period to give the Auggies a commanding advantage. Pennington put her first goal of the season on the board at the 11:26 mark, on a blast from the blue line that found a hole past Finlandia goalie Corrine Czekaj (Fr., Livonia, Mich.).
Syrowik scored her second goal for Finlandia at the 2:33 mark of the third period from Katie O'Brien (Fr., Grand Rapids, Mich.), and Chezick clinched the win for the Auggies with her record-setting goal midway through the frame.
