Men's Hockey 11/19/04 -- Wisconsin-Eau Claire 7, Augsburg 4

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (11/19/04) -- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team fought off 14 power play opportunities for visiting Augsburg College, scoring a 7-4 nonconference victory over the Auggies Friday night at Hobbs Ice Arena.

The win is the third straight for the Blugolds as they move to 4-3-0 on the season. Augsburg falls to 1-3-1 on the season.

Rob Ouimette (Sr., Iron Bridge, Ontario/Leamington District) got the scoring started for the Blugolds, tallying the first two goals of the game. Less than five minutes into the contest, he took a pass from Ben Manny (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and gave the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, he widened the lead to 2-0 on a pass from Kyle Garner (So.-Sun Prairie).

The Auggies made it a one-goal game with less than two minutes remaining in the period on a goal by Aaron Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), from Danny Carlson (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) and Joe Haehn (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), but the Blugolds would get the last word in the first period.

With just one second remaining in the opening period, Phil Cherneski (Sr., Thompson, Manitoba) took a pass from Ouimette and gave the Blugolds a 3-1 lead. Dave Coleman (So., Whitby, Ontario/Leo J. Austin HS) also earned an assist on the goal.

The lone goal of the second period came just 1:28 in, when Chip Dunleavy (Jr., Littleton, Colo./Columbine HS) scored an unassisted, short-handed goal to give Eau Claire a 4-1 advantage.

Brooks Lockwood (So., Hudson, Wis.) and Dunleavy added goals in the third, following the Auggies' second goal of the game from David Clements (Fr., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS), on an assist from Tom Doyle (So., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS).

Augsburg tallied two more goals late in the game -- an unassisted tally from Steve Belde (Sr., Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and a shorthanded goal from Carlson, on assists from Johnson and Matt Parnell (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) -- but Cherneski's second goal of the game finished the scoring at 7-4.

The Blugolds committed 19 penalties for 38 minutes but fought off of all 14 power play tries for the Auggies. Eau Claire was 2-for-11 on power play tries.

Steffan Braunlich (Jr., Playa del Rey, Calif./Loyola HS), who played his freshman season at Augsburg, played all 60 minutes in net for the Blugolds, making 30 saves on the night. Augsburg's Tony Ciro (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 41 saves, as the Blugolds outshot the Auggies by a 48-34 margin.

On Saturday (11/20), Augsburg plays at Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 7:30 p.m., while Wisconsin-Eau Claire hosts Concordia-Moorhead at 7 p.m.
