MINNEAPOLIS (11/19/04) --
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) continued her scoring streak to start the Augsburg College women's hockey season, scoring two goals and adding an assist as the Auggies remained unbeaten with a 6-3 triumph over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
The Auggies' top line of Anderson, Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) and
Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) accounted for four of the six Auggie goals on the evening, with Chezick and Cookson claiming a goal and assist each.
Augsburg remained unbeaten with the win, improving to 3-0-2 overall, 1-0-0 in MIAC play. The Auggies are off to their second-best start to a season in the 10-year history of the school's women's hockey program; Augsburg started with a 9-0-1 start to the 1998-99 season, the longest unbeaten streak (10 games) in school history (against varsity opponents only).
Concordia-Moorhead fell to 0-3-0 on the season, 0-1-0 in MIAC play. The teams complete the MIAC-opening series on Saturday (11/20) at 5:15 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
After Concordia jumped on the board at the 5:06 mark of the first period, on a Paige Stone (So., San Dimas, Calif.) goal from Miranda Koenig (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.), Augsburg went on a scoring tear, popping in four unanswered goals to take a commanding lead.
Anderson scored an unassisted goal on a steal and drive at the seven-minute mark, and Chezick scored from Cookson and Anderson at the 15:26 mark. Augsburg tallied its eighth power-play goal of the season at the 18:01 mark of the first period, as
Laura Prasek (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) scored from
Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Corrie Krzyska (Sr., Buffalo, Minn./Fridley HS).
Anderson scored her second goal of the game midway through the second period from Chezick, improving her team-leading goal total to nine. Anderson now has 16 points on the season (nine goals, seven assists), putting her among the top scorers in the nation in NCAA Division III women's hockey. Anderson currently leads the nation in both total points and total goals, ranking second nationally in points-per-game (3.20) and third in goals-per-game (1.80). She also leads the nation with five power-play goals.
Lindsay Czarnecki (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) had a goal and assist for the Cobbers in the third period. She assisted on a Hannah Impola (So., Brainerd, Minn.) goal at the 4:19 mark of the frame, and scored from Brandie Dunn (So., Plano, Texas) at the 10:56 mark.
Augsburg clinched the win with a Cookson unassisted tally just 42 seconds after Czarnecki's goal, along with an empty-net goal from
Britt Pennington (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) at the 18:06 mark of the period.
Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 35-30 margin, building a 20-9 advantage in the first period. Concordia outshot Augsburg 10-4 in the third period.
Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS), making her second collegiate start in goal, claimed the win for the Auggies, making 27 saves.
Jamie Savage (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount HS) started in goal for the Cobbers, but was replaced after the first period by Jenna Johnson (Jr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS). Savage made 17 saves, while Johnson made 12 saves.
