Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) claimed a natural hat trick with three consecutive goals, leading the Augsburg College women's hockey team to a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the College of St. Catherine on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) added three assists and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) claimed her 50th career assist for the Auggies, now 5-3-2 overall, 3-2-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg broke a three-game losing streak with the victory.
The hat trick was the the first in the collegiate career for Cookson, who transferred this season to Augsburg after playing her first two years at the Division I University of Wisconsin.
Cookson scored her first goal at the 5:23 mark of the first period, from Kleewein and Chezick, and followed with two goals in the second period, at the 7:08 mark from Chezick and
Calla Lundquist (Jr., Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County HS) and at the 19:10 mark, putting home a rebound in front from Chezick and
Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.).
St. Catherine scored its lone goal at the 1:44 mark of the third period, as Angela M. Johnson (So., Wadena, Minn.) scored unassisted, stuffing home a puck from the right of the net. But Augsburg put the cap on the game as
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) took a steal from
Jana Ford (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) and skated in for a breakaway goal at the 4:46 mark.
Kleewein earned her 50th career assist in the contest. Augsburg's all-time leading scorer among defenders (nine goals, 50 assists, 59 points), Kleewein is fifth all-time among all Augsburg varsity players in career scoring.
With her three assists, Chezick continued to expand her all-time scoring record. Chezick holds the school records for career points (131) and assists (78), while standing second all-time in goals (53), behind the school mark of 68 set by Angie Rieger from 1997-2001.
Augsburg dominated play from start to finish, claiming a 43-22 advantage in shots on goal.
Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 21 saves to score the win, while Morgan Kane (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) made 39 saves in a losing effort.
The teams conclude the weekend series on Saturday (12/11) at 12 noon at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
