MINNEAPOLIS (12/11/04) --
Joe Haehn (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) scored three goals, all on the power play, for his first collegiate hat trick, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team scored its most goals in a single game since the 2002-03 season in a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over visiting Hamline University on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Tony Ciro (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) stopped all 29 shots he faced for his second straight shutout for the Auggies, now 5-5-2 overall, 3-1-0 in MIAC play. Hamline is now 2-10-0 overall, 0-4 in MIAC play.
Augsburg went 4-of-5 on the power play and added a shorthanded goal on Saturday to sweep the weekend series, both games by shutout, outscoring Hamline 13-0 on the weekend.
Augsburg scored nine goals in a game for the first time since wins of 9-0 and 9-5 over Northland (Wis.) on Feb. 14-15, 2003. The nine goals were the most in an MIAC game for Augsburg since a 9-4 win at Hamline on Jan. 10, 2003.
Haehn claimed his first collegiate multi-goal performance, scoring power-play goals in each of the three periods.
Greg May (So., Burnsville, Minn.) also had a power-play goal and
Matt Jackson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) added an unassisted, shorthanded goal for the Auggies.
Brett Osness (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Springbrook HS) had a goal and two assists,
David Clements (Fr., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) scored a goal and added an assist, and
Critter Nagurski (So., International Falls, Minn.) had two assists.
Aaron Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) added two assists, as did
Danny Clements (Fr., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS).
Augsburg opened the scoring with a Haehn power-play goal from Johnson just 3:10 into the game, the lone goal of the first period that saw Hamline outshoot Augsburg by a 41-29 margin.
Augsburg exploded in the second period, putting five goals on the board.
Steve Collova (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored his first goal of the season at the seven-minute mark, and Haehn scored a power-play goal at the 8:57 mark. Osness scored at the 11:50 mark and
David Clements scored at the 15:56 mark, with Jackson contributing his shorthanded goal at the 18:45 mark.
In the third period, Augsburg added to the lead with goals by
Jason Fleck (Fr., Camrose, Alberta/Camrose Composite HS) at the 4:30 mark, Haehn at the 8:36 mark and May at the 17:02 mark.
Augsburg ended up outshooting Hamline by a 41-29 margin, with a 12-7 advantage in the second period and a 21-6 advantage in the third period. On the weekend, Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 77-48 margin.
Ciro, a transfer from Bethel, claimed his second straight shutout by stopping all 29 shots he faced. John Harstad (Sr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) stopped 32 saves in a losing effort for Hamline.
Augsburg returns to action with its third game in three days on Sunday (12/12) at 4 p.m., hosting Marian (Wis.) in a nonconference game at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Hamline is off for the holiday break and returns to action on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., with a nonconference game against St. Scholastica at the State Fair Coliseum.
