Augsburg completes weekend sweep with 4-2 victory at St. Catherine

MINNEAPOLIS (12/11/04) -- Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) claimed a goal and an assist, and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) notched two assists, leading the Augsburg College women's hockey team to a 4-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the College of St. Catherine on Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena.

Jana Ford (Sr., Eagan, Minn.), Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) and Britt Pennington (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) also scored for the Auggies, now 6-3-2 overall, 4-2-0 in MIAC play with the weekend series sweep. St. Catherine is now 2-7-0 overall, 2-4-0 in MIAC play.

With her natural hat trick in Friday's game, Cookson finished the weekend with five points -- four goals and one assist. Cookson transferred to Augsburg this season after playing her first two years at the Division I University of Wisconsin.

Augsburg jumped on the board quickly with three goals in the first six minutes of play. Ford scored from Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) and Kleewein just 20 seconds into the game, and Chezick followed with a goal from Cookson and Kleewein at the 2:49 mark. Pennington completed the opening blitz with an unassisted power-play goal at the 5:28 mark.

St. Catherine trimmed the lead on an unassisted goal from Angela Carstenbrock (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) at the 13:28 mark of the first period.

Augsbug clinched the win at the 6:37 mark of the third period, as Cookson scored a shorthanded goal. St. Catherine put a goal on the board with five seconds to play in the game, as Megan Mumm (Fr., Neenah, Wis.) scored from Danelle Bode (Fr., New Ulm, Minn.) and Sarah Stieve (Fr., Orono, Minn.).

Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 48-24 margin, completing a weekend in which the Auggies outshot the Wildcats by a 91-46 count. Jena Kleis (Fr., Hastings, Minn.), making her second career start in goal for the Auggies, made 22 saves to score the win; Morgan Kane (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) made 44 saves in a losing effort.

Augsburg now has a month off for the holiday break, returning to action with a series Jan. 12 and 14 against Bethel University. The Wednesday, Jan. 12 game will be at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Arena in Fridley, Minn., with the Friday, Jan. 14 game at 5:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

St. Catherine is also now off for the holidays, returning to action with a weekend series at Lake Forest (Ill.) Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. and Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. St. Catherine also has an exhibition game at club opponent Robert Morris (Ill.) on Jan. 5 at 6:45 p.m.
