MINNEAPOLIS (12/12/04) --
Joe Haehn (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) scored two power-play goals, including the eventual game-winning goal midway through the second period, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team won its third game in a three-day span with a 5-2 triumph over Marian College (Wis.) in nonconference action Sunday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Steve Collova (Sr, White Bear Lake, Minn.) and
Aaron Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a goal and assist apiece, and
Danny Carlson (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) had three assists for the Auggies, now 6-5-2 overall. After starting the season 1-4-1, Augsburg has now won five of its last seven games (5-1-1).
Marian is now 5-8-2 overall, having lost four of its last six games.
In Augsburg's three games on the weekend, including Friday's 4-0 win and Saturday's 9-0 win over Hamline, Haehn scored six goals -- five coming on the power play. Haehn now has a team-high 10 goals on the season, six on the power play.
As a team, Augsburg scored three power-play goals and had a shorthanded tally on Sunday. In the three victories this weekend, 10 of Augsburg's 18 goals came on special teams -- eight power-play goals (8-of-18 on the power play) and two shorthanded goals.
Meanwhile, goalie
Tony Ciro (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) claimed his third straight win in goal for the Auggies, stopping 34 shots on Sunday. On the weekend, Ciro played every minute of the three games, stopping 82 of the 84 shots he faced, after recording back-to-back shutouts on Friday and Saturday.
Augsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, as Collova scored from Carlson on the power play at the 5:07 mark, and Johnson scored from
Tom Doyle (So., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and Carlson shorthanded at the 17:40 mark.
But Marian rallied to tie the game with two goals in a four-minute span, as Pat McKay (Sr., St. Clair Shores, Mich.) scored from Chad Little (So., Southhampton, Ontario) and Jon Daigle (Sr., Richmond, British Columbia) at the 7:27 mark, and Daigle scored from Andy Allen (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) and Matthew Bobo (So., Mattawan, Mich.) at the 11:12 mark.
But Augsburg took the lead for good three minutes later, as Haehn converted a power-play goal from Collova and Carlson at the 14:39 mark. Augsburg clinched the win with two goals in the third period -- Haehn's second power-play goal from
Critter Nagurski (So., International Falls, Minn.) and Johnson at the 5:43 mark, and the first collegiate goal for
Jordan Starke (Fr., Calgary, Alberta/Bowness HS) on an unassisted marker at 14:29.
Marian outshot Augsburg by a 36-30 margin in the game, with Kyle Grabowski (So., Oakdale, Minn.) making 25 saves for the Sabres.
Augsburg now has almost a month off for the holiday break, returning to action with an exhibition game against the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (Calgary, Alberta) on Friday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Augsburg's next regular-season series will be a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against St. Mary's, with the first game on Friday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and the second game on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's.
Marian is also now off for the holiday break, returning to action with a nonconference series against Wisconsin-River Falls on Jan. 7-8, with both games at 7 p.m. at Marian.
