Women's Basketball 12/28/04 -- Wisconsin-La Crosse 77, Augsburg 65

LA CROSSE, Wis. (12/28/04) -- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team improved to 7-4 on the season with a 77-65 victory over Augsburg College in nonconference action Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall. Augsburg drops to 0-6 on the season.
The Auggies led by as many as five in the first half and 22-21 with 8:42 left, before the Eagles went on a 10-0 run for a 31-22 lead. UW-L led 40-34 at halftime. Augsburg cut the lead to 42-38 early in the second half, but UW-L went on a 8-0 run. The Auggies cut it to 60-55 with 6:54 remaining in the game before the Eagles went on a 8-1 run and Augsburg could get no closer than eight points the rest of the game.
Jana Merchlewitz led four UW-L players in double figures with 17 points. She added four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Nicole Palmer scored a career-high 16 points while also finishing with five rebounds and two assists. Katy Searing recorded her fifth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Leslie Matson had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
UW-L shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 75.0 percent (15-of-20) at the free-throw line.
Rosinta Stromquist (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and
Katie Kelsey (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) led Augsburg with 12 points, with Stromquist adding three blocked shots and two steals to go with five rebounds.
Alissa Blood (So., Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, and
Amy Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) had eight points and eight rebounds.
The Auggies shot 45.9 percent from the field, including 25.0 percent (2-of-8) from three-point range. Augsburg shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12) at the line and finished with 26 turnovers.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (12/30), hosting Northwestern-Roseville as part of a basketball doubleheader at Si Melby Hall. The women's game is at 5:30 p.m., with the men's game following at 7:30 p.m. UW-L travels to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.
