MINNEAPOLIS (12/3/04) -- Kara Meyer (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) made 20 saves in goal for her second shutout of the season and Molly Doyle (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) claimed two assists, as Gustavus Adolphus College claimed its fourth straight shutout victory, a 3-0 triumph over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Gustavus dominated the game from start to finish, improving to 4-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in MIAC play. The Gusties, ranked No. 6 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll, outshot the Auggies by a 40-20 margin.
Augsburg dropped its second straight game to fall to 4-2-2 overall, 2-1-0 in MIAC play. The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday (12/4) at 7 p.m. at Gustavus.
Gustavus has now built a shutout streak of 274 minutes, 19 seconds over its five games this season. Gustavus has outscored its opponents by a 21-2 margin this season.
Gustie defender Andrea Peterson (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to open the scoring at the 11:30 mark of the first period, on assists from Doyle and Kelly Crandall (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
The Gusties expanded their lead with five seconds to go in the first period, as Ingrid Neve (So., St. Paul, Minn./Roseville HS) scored from Doyle. The capper came in the third period, as Becky Steiner (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season from Laura Vannelli (Fr., Eagan, Minn.), as Steiner scored on a rebound in front off a Vannelli shot.
Augsburg goalkeeper
Kristin Johnson (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 37 saves. Gustavus outshot the Auggies by a 29-8 margin through the first two periods, but Augsburg outshot the Gusties 12-11 in the final frame.
