MINNEAPOLIS (2/14/04) -- Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and
Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.) had a goal and assist apiece, and
Katie Fedoryk (Sr., Austin, Minn.) set a school record with her eighth career shutout, as the Augsburg College women's hockey team completed a series sweep with a 5-0 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg outshot St. Catherine 39-22 in claiming the easy victory, scoring the series sweep and improving to 12-9-0 overall, 8-6-0 in MIAC play. St. Catherine drops to 6-13-1 overall and 6-8-0 in the MIAC. The win keeps the Auggies, with four conference games left, in the hunt for a spot in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs.
Fedoryk stopped all 22 shots she faced in the contest to claim her fourth shutout of the season and school-record eighth career shutout, passing Meg Schmidt (1996-2000) and teammate
Kristin Johnson (2001-present), who each have seven shutouts.
Kristin Murr (Fr., Thornton, Colo./Quest Academy HS) put the Auggies on the board first with her 10th goal of the season, on an assist by
Carrie Velenchenko (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) at the 6:18 mark. Annunziato followed the goal with her team-leading 14th of the season, on an assist by Chezick, at the 15:06 mark.
Augsburg scored twice in the second period, as
Jana Ford (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) notched her second goal of the weekend on assists from
Christina Hughes (Sr., Chaska, Minn.) and
Dottie Gilkerson (Sr., Somerset, Wis.) at the 7:01 mark.
Chezick tied Annunziato for the team lead in scoring with her 14th of the year on the power play, taking a feed from Annunziato just five seconds into the player advantage at the 17:51 mark. The goal was the first power-play goal given up by St. Catherine this season in 38 chances.
Laura Prasek (Jr., Fridley, Minn.) completed the scoring for the Auggies with a steal and unassisted goal at the 9:08 mark of the third period.
Morgan Kane (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) made 34 saves for St. Catherine.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action with a two-game series against St. Benedict next weekend. Saturday's (2/21) game is at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, with Sunday's (2/22) game at 2 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
St. Catherine is back in action with a weekend series against Gustavus. Friday's game (2/20) is at 6:05 p.m. at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, with Saturday's game at 2:05 p.m. in St. Peter.
