MINNEAPOLIS (2/21/04) -- Mike Franks (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn./Burnsville HS) scored his first two collegiate goals on Saturday, and
David Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) made 37 saves to score his second victory of the season, as Augsburg College dispatched the University of Minnesota-Crookston 6-2 in a nonconference men's hockey game at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Both Franks and
Matt Jackson (Fr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS) collected their first collegiate goals on Saturday, and Nash, making just his eighth game appearance of the season on Saturday, had his best career outing in the goal for the Auggies, now 8-11-4 overall.
Minnesota-Crookston drops to 11-11-3 on the season.
Augsburg got most of its scoring punch from its young roster, particularly in the third period, as the Auggies jumped on the Golden Eagles with four goals in a nine-minute span.
Collin Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) -- one of only two non-freshmen/sophomores to figure in the scoring for the Auggies on Saturday -- scored from
Ben Sandvik (So., Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and Brett Osness (So., Calgary, Alberta/Springbrook HS) at the 3:24 mark, and Jackson scored a shorthanded goal from
Greg May (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) at the 6:51 mark.
May scored from Sandvik and
Joe Haehn (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) at the 9:51 mark, and Franks scored his first college goal from
Chad Baldwin (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) at the 12:31 mark.
Osness scored first for the Auggies, with a goal at the 6:53 mark from Haehn and
Brad Bjorgum (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS), and Franks' goal at the 10:57 mark of the third, from Baldwin and May, capped the Auggie scoring.
Minnesota-Crookston got a goal from Brock Anundson (Jr., Baudette, Minn.) at the 10:03 mark of the first period, from Theran Bauer (Jr., Spooner, Wis.) and Ben Perkins (Sr., New Brighton, Minn.). The Golden Eagles also got a goal from Josh Jaeger (Sr., Devils Lake, N.D.), on assists from Perkins and Anundson, at the 11:36 mark of the second period.
Erik Kraska (So., Plymouth, Minn.) made 20 saves in a losing cause for Minnesota-Crookston. The Golden Eagles played the last 5:03 of the game with an empty net.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action next weekend with its final series of the regular season, facing league-leader St. John's. Friday's (2/27) game is at the Augsburg Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday's (2/28) game is at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn., at 2 p.m.
With its regular season now complete, Minnesota-Crookston competes in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. The No. 2 seed, the Golden Eagles face No. 3 Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wis.
