MINNEAPOLIS (2/6/04) -- Andrea Eilertson (Fr., Kiester, Minn./United South Central HS) came off the bench to lead Hamline University with 17 points and five rebounds -- 10 points in the first half -- as the Pipers claimed a 67-59 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Hamline broke a six-game losing streak to improve to 7-14 overall, 5-13 in MIAC play. Augsburg dropped its fourth game in a row to fall to 4-17 overall, 4-14 in MIAC play.
Augsburg built an early six-point lead, but Hamline used a 10-2 lead midway through the first half to claim its first lead of the game, 20-17 with 9:09 left. Hamline stretched the lead to six points in the first half and led 36-32 at halftime.
A 15-4 run over a six-minute span early in the second half proved to be the difference, as the Pipers built a 13-point lead, 51-38 with 12:20 left to play. The Piper lead eventually swelled to as many as 15 points, before Augsburg cut the advantage to single digits in the closing minutes.
Jess Barrett (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) had 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Pipers, while Carolyn Korchik (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Erin Petrich (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had nine points apiece. Petrich added six rebounds, five assists and a steal.
Augsburg was paced by
Julie Andert * (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), who had 17 points and eight rebounds.
Ashley Sasek (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had a career-high 16 points, to go with four assits, while
Ashley Vossen (So., St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Selina Theisen (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had seven points, five rebounds and six blocked shots.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Wednesday (2/11) at 7:30 p.m., in Northfield, Minn. Augsburg plays at St. Olaf, while Hamline plays at Carleton
