Women's Hockey 3/2/04 -- MIAC Playoffs Play-In Game: Augsburg 2, St. Mary's 1
BOXSCORE
WINONA, Minn. (3/2/04) --
Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS) scored the eventual game-winning goal with 4:15 remaining in regulation, and
Katie Fedoryk (Sr., Austin, Minn.) made 28 saves in goal for Augsburg College, as the Auggies avenged last year's playoff defeat with a 2-1 victory over host St. Mary's University, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey playoff "play-in" game on Tuesday night at the SMU Ice Arena.
Britt Pennington (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) scored an unassisted power-play goal midway through the second period to tie the game for the Auggies, who entered the game as the No. 5 seed in the five-team MIAC playoffs.
Augsburg improves to 15-9-2 overall, extending its unbeaten streak to nine straight games (7-0-2). Augsburg is 9-1-2 in its last 12 games. St. Mary's, the No. 4 seed, finishes its season at 15-9-2, seeing its 6-1-1 mark in its last eight games -- including five shutouts -- come to an end.
Augsburg will play at top seed and two-time MIAC regular-season champion St. Thomas (18-4-2) on Thursday (3/4) at 5 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena at St. Thomas Academy High School in Mendota Heights (directions to the arena -- click here). In the final series of the regular season last weekend, Augsburg took three of four conference points from St. Thomas, tying 2-2 in overtime at St. Thomas on Friday and winning 2-1 in overtime at Augsburg on Saturday.
Katie Berg (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn./Burnsville HS) put in a loose puck in front at 14:28 of the first period to give the Cardinals the early advantage, on assists from Kate Williams (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Jenny Hocum (Jr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS).
Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by an 11-8 margin in the second period, and the Auggies tied the game on Pennington's second goal of the season at the 9:59 mark.
Both Augsburg's Fedoryk and St. Mary's goalie Nikki Jung (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) played well, with Fedoryk stopping 28 of 29 shots she faced and Jung stopping 27 of the 29 shots she faced.
However, Anderson notched her fifth game-winning goal of the season on a solo breakaway off a tape-to-tape pass from
Annie Annunziato (Sr., Commack, N.Y.) at the 15:45 mark of the third period, sliding the puck under Jung's glove.
Annunziato, who transferred to Augsburg from Manhattanville (N.Y.) last year, now has 151 career points (61 goals, 90 assists) in 103 career games. At Augsburg, she has 88 points (39 goals, 49 assists) in 52 games over two seasons.
Augsburg's top line of Annunziato, Anderson and Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) have combined for 45 of Augsburg's 83 goals (54.2 percent), 53 of Augsburg's 113 assists (46.9 percent) and 98 of Augsburg's 196 total points (50.0 percent).
