MINNEAPOLIS (9/11/04) --
Mark Cohn (Fr., Anoka,Minn./Blaine HS) scored his first two collegiate goals in a 12-minute span, as Augsburg College dominated play in a 4-0 triumph over Martin Luther College in a nonconference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Cohn notched his first goal just 67 seconds into the game, deflecting a
Vinnie Brooks (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) shot off his chest and past the Martin Luther goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, Cohn fired a blast from 20 yards out to put the Auggies in front to stay.
It was a day for scoring for the Auggie freshmen, as
Ben Simonet (Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) and
Nick Nelson (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) also scored in the victory, pushing Augsburg's record to 2-1-1 on the season.
Martin Luther, champions of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, drops to 1-4 on the season.
Mike Elcano (Sr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) had two assists for the Auggies, while
Lucas Grant (Sr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska HS) picked up the shutout in goal, making three saves.
Augsburg dominated play from start to finish, outshooting the Knights 31-7 and claiming an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Simonet scored late in the first half on a brilliant goal, dribbling around several defenders along the right baseline and firing a shot across the crease and past Martin Luther goalkeeper Ben Pagel (So., Moline, Ill.).
Pagel played the first half for the Knights, making five saves and allowing three goals. His replacement, Justin Vilski (Jr., Lomira, Wis.), made two saves and allowed a goal.
Nick Nelson (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) scored in the 72nd minute, taking a shot off the post by
Nicholas Stuber (So., Cadillac, Mich.) and depositing it into an open net.
