MINNEAPOLIS (9/15/04) -- Rebecca Shane (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led all players with 13 kills, connected on a .524 attack percentage and had two blocks (two solo), as her Concordia College-Moorhead squad claimed a three-game sweep of host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Game scores were 30-24, 30-21 and 30-23 in favor of the Cobbers, ranked No. 21 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll. Concordia is now 5-1 overall, while Augsburg drops to 4-6. It was the first MIAC match of the season for both teams.
Shane had just two errors in 21 attack attempts with 13 kills -- including a 6-for-6 effort in the first game -- for her .524 percentage. As a team, Concordia hit a strong .313, with 47 kills and just 11 errors in 115 attacks. Meanwhile, Augsburg hit just .192 (43 kills, 19 errors in 125 attempts), including hitting .091 (15 kills and 10 errors) in the third game.
Amy Fitzner (Sr., Valley City, N.D.) had 10 kills and hit .308 (two errors in 26 attempts), and Jacki Barten (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) had nine kills and hit .261 for the Cobbers. Kris Sather (Sr., Fosston, Minn.) had five kills and six service aces, while Michelle Honek (Fr., Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) had five kills.
Jessica Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) contributed 38 assists, two aces and eight digs, and libero Anna Walden (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) had 15 digs. Concordia also took advantage of 13 service aces in the match -- seven in the first game.
Barten went 5-for-7 with no errors (.714) in the second game to lead the Cobbers, who hit .395 as a team (18 kills, three errors in 38 attempts). Honek went 4-for-9 with no errors (.444) in the second game. Fitzner had four kills to lead the Cobbers in the third game.
Augsburg was paced by two players with double-doubles --
Sarah Bradley (Fr., International Falls, Minn.) had 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces, while
Linnea Evans * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had 10 kills, 11 digs, two blocks (one solo) and two aces.
Billie Painschab (Jr., Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly HS) had 10 kills and two blocks for the Auggies, while
Alexis Johnson (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 38 assists,
Tina Quick (Fr., Blaine, Minn./Centennial HS) had 12 digs and
Kristy Larson * (Sr., Pine Island, Minn.) contributed seven kills and two blocks (one solo).
Augsburg returns to action this weekend with matches at the Northland College (Wis.) Invitational in Ashland, Wis. Augsburg plays host Northland on Friday (9/17) at 5 p.m., and faces Mount Mary (Iowa) on Saturday (9/18) at 9 a.m. and Finlandia (Mich.) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Concordia returns to action on Friday and Saturday hosting its own tournament in Moorhead.
