Elcano scores twice again, Augsburg gets third win in a row, beats St. Mary's 5-0!

MINNEAPOLIS (9/22/04) -- Mike Elcano (Sr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) scored two goals and added an an assist, and Lucas Grant (Sr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska HS) had five saves for his fourth shutout of the season, as Augsburg College cruised to a 5-0 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Elcano, Augsburg's team leader in scoring with seven goals and three assists, has scored twice in each of his last three games, as the Auggies have claimed three wins in a row in improving to 5-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 in MIAC play. St. Mary's was shut out for its second game in a row in falling to 1-4-2 overall, 0-2-0 in MIAC play.

Elcano opened the scoring for the Auggies in the ninth minute, scoring on a give-and-go from the top of the penalty box from Mark Cohn (Fr., Anoka, Minn./Blaine HS).

Cohn followed with his fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute, heading in a corner kick from Ryan Kitzman (So., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS).

In the 41st minute, Ben Simonet (Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) stole the ball near midfield and fired a long pass to Elcano, who sprinted for his second goal of the game.

Augsburg scored two goals in a 34-second span midway through the second half to put the game out of reach. Aaron Riedel (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) flipped a downfield pass to Simonet, who sprinted up the middle to deposit his fourth goal of the season. A steal off the ensuing draw produced a pass from Elcano to Alec Rabine (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.), who scored his first collegiate goal on a bullet shot from the left side of the penalty box.

Patrick Tollaksen (So., Racine, Wis./Racine St. Catherine's HS) had five shots for the Cardinals, while Mike Schmitt (So., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North HS) had four shots.

Grant made five saves to score the win in goal for the Auggies, while Bob Endemann (Sr., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) had two saves in a losing effort for St. Mary's.

Both teams return to action with nonconference doubleheaders on Saturday (9/25). Augsburg plays at St. Scholastica, with the women's game at 1 p.m., and the men's game at 3 p.m. St. Mary's hosts Marian (Wis.), with the women's game at 1 p.m. and the men's game at 3 p.m.
