BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/4/04) -- Sarah Carlson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) picked up a steal from Julie Shuldheisz (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) and deposited it in the net in the sixth minute, the only goal the University of Wisconsin-River Falls would need in a 1-0 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Andrea Dudley (Fr., St. Paul Park, Minn./Park HS) made three saves to record the shutout in goal for the Falcons, now 2-0 overall. Wisconsin-River Falls won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title in 2003. Augsburg is now 0-2 to start the season.

The Falcons' goal came as Augsburg was attempting to clear a drive in its own penalty box. Shuldheisz picked off a pass attempt and fed the ball from the right to Carlson, who was open in the middle of the penalty box. She fired a shot past Augsburg goalkeeper Liz Osterman (Fr., Lincoln, Neb./Southeast HS) for the lone goal of the game. The goal was Carlson's second of the season.

The game was a defensive struggle after the opening goal, as neither team could mount any sustained attacks. Wisconsin-River Falls outshot Augsburg by a 13-9 margin in the game, though Augsburg had six corner kicks to the Falcons' one. Both Osterman and Dudley made three saves on the day for their respective teams.

Midfielder Jackie Keller (Fr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) led the Auggies with three shots, while Amy Jensen (So., Plymouth, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) had four shots for the Falcons.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (9/4) at 7:30 p.m. with a game at Macalester, while Wisconsin-River Falls has another nonconference game against an MIAC opponent coming up, hosting St. Catherine on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
