Men's Soccer 9/7/04 -- Augsburg 1, Macalester 1 (2OT)

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/7/04) -- Lucas Grant (Sr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska HS) made 13 saves in goal, as Augsburg College handed Macalester College just its fourth non-victory in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer play in four seasons and broke a 17-season losing streak to the Scots in the process, as the teams played to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at Edor Nelson Field.

Mike Elcano (Sr., Sparks, Nev./Bishop Manogue HS) put the Auggies (1-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 MIAC) in front with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute, but the Scots (1-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 MIAC) scored to tie the game with 2:50 left, on Magnus Oppenheimer's (So., Stockholm, Sweden) first goal of the season.

The teams played 20 minutes of sudden-death overtime scoreless, though Macalester outshot Augsburg by a 10-0 margin in the two extra sessions.

Macalester extended its MIAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 31 straight games, a 27-0-4 record dating to the 2000 season. The draw was just Macalester's seventh MIAC tie and eighth non-victory since the 1998 season, a 47-1-7 record in league play.

The draw broke a 17-game winning streak for the Scots in the all-time series against the Auggies, dating to the 1987 season. Augsburg's last victory over the Scots was a 2-1 triumph in the 1986 season.

Elcano stole the ball in midfield, worked it forward and blasted the ball from 20 yards out, past Macalester goalkeeper Tom Klezcewski (Sr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), at the 52:16 mark. Klezcewski made two saves in 110 minutes for the Scots.

But after the Auggie goal, the Scots took complete control of the game, dominating virtually every possession and peppering Grant with shots. Macalester outshot Augsburg by a 38-7 margin in the game -- a 27-3 advantage in the second half and two overtime periods.

Macalester had several opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes of regulation, including two shots that hit the goalpost and another rebound shot that was sent wide off a post shot.

But in the 88th minute, the Scots finally found a way past Grant, scoring on a scramble in the penalty box off a corner kick. Oppenheimer found the ball in front and put it in the net to tie the game.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/11) at 1 p.m., with a nonconference game against Martin Luther College at Edor Nelson Field. Macalester returns to action next Wednesday (9/15) at 7:30 p.m., hosting St. Mary's University in MIAC play at Macalester Stadium.
