FRIDLEY, Minn. (1/12/05) -- Anne Gilbertson (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 2:43 mark of the third period, as Bethel University overcame a 42-12 shots-on-goal deficit to score a 2-1 triumph over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Wednesday night at Columbia Arena.
Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 10-2 mark in the first period, 17-3 in the second period and 15-7 in the third period, but could only manage one goal past Bethel goalie Kelly Moriarty (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), who made 41 saves to claim the win.
Bethel, which has been outscored 47-10 this season, is now 2-7-0 overall, 2-5-0 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 6-4-2 overall, 4-3-0 in MIAC play. The teams conclude the MIAC series on Friday (1/14) at 5:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Heidi Govednik (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.) scored for the Royals at the 11:40 mark of the first period on an unassisted tally. Augsburg tied the game 30 seconds into the second period, as
Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) scored from Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.).
But early in the third period, Gilbertson scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted tally, and the Royals went ahead for good. Augsburg failed to score on six power-play opportunities in the game, including two opportunities in the third period.
