Women's Hockey 1/14/05 -- Augsburg 3, Bethel 2 (OT)

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (1/14/05) -- Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) scored on a rebound goal from Laura Prasek (Sr., Fridley, Minn.) with 36 seconds left in overtime, giving Augsburg College a 3-2 overtime win over Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Prasek tied the game for the Auggies on a power-play blast with 2:15 remaining in regulation time, on an assist from Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS).

The game-winning goal came after a Prasek shot from the right side was blocked in front of Bethel goalie Kelly Moriarty (Fr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS). The puck slid left to Anderson, who drove toward an open net, popping the shot past a diving Moriarty for the game-winner.

Augsburg gained a split of the MIAC series and improved to 7-4-2 overall, 5-3-0 in MIAC play. Bethel drops to 2-8-0 overall, 2-6-0 in MIAC play.

For the second straight game, Augsburg held a significant shots-on-goal advantage, but faced a strong game from Bethel's Moriarty. Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 33-18 margin, but Moriarty came up with 30 saves. In the two-game series, Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 75-30 margin, with Moriarty making 71 saves.

Augsburg opened the scoring in the first two minutes of play, as Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) notched her second goal of the series from Jenny Schmidt (Fr., North St. Paul, Minn.) at the 1:40 mark.

Bethel tied the game on a goal from Lisa Kinney (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) at the 19:23 mark of the first period, on assists from Amie Lorence (Fr., Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) and Heidi Govednik (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn.), and the Royals took the lead midway through the third period, as Stephanie Williams (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored from Kinney at the 9:23 mark.

Bethel was whistled for a penalty with 2:52 remaining, leading to the Prasek power-play goal to tie the game.

Bethel was whistled for five penalties for 10 minutes, while Augsburg was not whistled for a penalty in the game, the 10th time Augsburg has played a game without a penalty in the 10-year history of the women's hockey program.

Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 16 saves in goal for Augsburg.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/15) at 2:05 p.m., hosting Amherst (Mass.) in a nonconference game at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Bethel and Augsburg open MIAC action next weekend with home games on Friday (1/21) at 7 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Benedict and Bethel hosting St. Olaf.
