Cookson strikes twice again, Auggies complete sweep with 4-2, come-from-behind win at St. Benedict

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (1/22/05) -- Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) scored two goals for the second game in a row, leading Augsburg College to its sixth win in the last seven games, completing a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey series sweep with a 4-2, come-from-behind victory over the College of St. Benedict on Saturday night at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Augsburg rallied from a second-period 2-0 deficit with four straight special-team goals -- two on the power play and two shorthanded -- to improve to 10-4-2 overall, 7-3-0 in MIAC play. St. Benedict is now 4-11-0 overall, 4-6-0 in MIAC play.

Trailing 2-0, Cookson scored her first goal of the game on a shorthanded, unassisted break at the 6:09 mark of the second period. She added her second goal of the season on the power play at the 7:27 mark of the third period, on assists from Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) and Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS). Cookson now has a team-high 14 goals on the season.

Augsburg took the lead at the 9:51 mark with its second shorthanded goal of the game, as Anderson struck from Kleewein. Anderson now has 13 goals on the season and the team's lead in points (27).

Augsburg capped the win on the power play again, as Corrie Krzyska (Sr., Buffalo, Minn./Fridley HS) scored from Britt Pennington (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) and Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) at the 15:22 mark of the third period.

St. Benedict scored midway through the first period on an Erin Baldwin (So., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) goal from Susan Engel (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) and Sarah Wilson (So., Fairmont, Minn.), then took a 2-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Engels just 22 seconds into the second period.

Augsburg outshot St. Benedict by a 43-15 margin. Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 13 saves to score the win, while Chelsie Kahlhamer (So., St. Cloud, Minn.) made 39 saves in a losing effort.

Augsburg takes a break from MIAC play next weekend, with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Stevens Point next Saturday (1/29) at 5 p.m. St. Benedict has next weekend off.
